Molecular electrostatics. Part 2.—Experimental technique of electric field induced infrared absorption spectroscopy of liquids

Abstract

Equipment for detecting electric field induced infrared absorption (EFIRA) in liquids is described. It is capable of registering changes in infrared transmission of 0.01 % relative to the incident beam, and of stressing liquid specimens to 5 × 107 V m–1. The major problems were posed by the electrical and optical design of the sample cells for the instrument.
