Kinetic isotope effects in the reactions of 4-nitrophenylnitromethane with various bases in chlorobenzene

Abstract

The kinetics of the proton-transfer reactions of 4-nitrophenylnitromethane with various bases in chlorobenzene solution have been studied, and deuterium isotope effects determined. The values of the isotopic rate ratio kH/kD at 25°C are all over 20, and suggest that tunnelling is important. The results are compared with those in other solvents.
