Behaviour of triethyloxonium hexachloroantimonate and triethyloxonium hexafluoroantimonate in dichloromethane solvent
Abstract
Equilibrium constants for the dissociation of the ion-pairs of triethyloxonium hexachloroantimonate and triethyloxonium hexafluoroantimonate in dichloromethane at 298 K have been measured conductimetrically. Gas-chromatographic and spectrophotometric analysis have established that triethyloxonium hexachloroantimonate decomposes to ethyl chloride, diethyl ether and antimony pentachloride. The conductivities of solutions of antimony pentachloride in dichloromethane have enabled estimates to be made of the equilibrium constants governing the self-ionization of antimony pentachloride to ion-pairs SbCl+4. SbCl–6 and separated SbCl+4 and SbCl–6 ions.
