A general mechanism for hydrogenation is proposed which unifies various features of the reaction; it is suggested that hydrogenation on metals should be interpreted as hydrogen transfer between an adsorbed hydrocarbon and the adsorbed olefin and should not be regarded as addition of hydrogen direct to the latter.
