Novel regioselectivity in radical addition to a diene

Abstract

With 3,7-dimethylocta-1,6-diene, carbon radicals ·CH2CO2H, ·CH(COMe)2, and ·CH(COMe)CO2Et add at the 6,7-alkene bond, whilst ·CH2COR(R = Me,Ph), ·CH(CO2Me)2, oxocyclopentyl, and oxocyclohexyl react at the 1,2-alkene; it is suggested that this behaviour is indicative of reversible addition at the 6,7 positions by the second group of radicals.
