Spectrophotometric determination of basicity constants. Part II. Acetanilides

Abstract

The basicity constants, KBH+, of 13 acetanilides have been evaluated in sulphuric acid at 25°. Recent evidence on the site of protonation of amides has been reviewed and a new equation for calculating pKBH+ has been formulated. The values of pKBH+ obtained for the para-substituted acetanilides correlate well with Hammett σ values.
