A nuclear magnetic resonance study of the addition of methanol and methoxide ions to substituted benzaldehydes, and corresponding JM acidity function values

Abstract

Values of the equilibrium constants, KS, for the addition of methanol, and KOR, for the addition of methoxide ions at the carbonyl group of a series of eleven substituted benzaldehydes have been determined by using an n.m.r. method. The results lead to the determination of a new JM acidity scale for methanolic sodium methoxide solutions which is compared with existing functions.
