Thiopyrylium-3-olate and its 5-methyl homologue have been synthesised from thiopyran-3-ones and isolated as perchloric acid salts. The thiopyrylium salts are readily dimerised to give stereoisomeric 3,11-dithiatricyclo-[5.3.1.12,6]dodecane derivatives with the syn-isomer as the major product. Spectroscopic and X-ray data for the isomers are discussed.
