The biosynthesis of fungal metabolites. Part VII. Production and biosynthesis of 4,7-dimethoxy-5-methylcoumarin in Aspergillus variecolor

Abstract

4,7-Dimethoxy-5-methylcoumarin (I)(4,7-dimethoxy-5-methylchromen-2-one) is shown to be a metabolite of Aspergillus variecolor, strain IMI 53749. Incorporation of [2-14C]acetate into this natural product shows that it is derived on the β-ketide pathway. A synthesis of compound (I) is reported.
