Librational motion in potassium aluminium hydride, studied by inelastic neutron scattering

Abstract

The librational mode of the AlH4 ion has been observed at 286 cm–1 by the use of incoherent inelastic neutron scattering, and the predicted barrier to rotation derived. Both the frequency and the barrier are very considerably lower than in LiAlH4 and NaAlH4(at 470 and 500 cm–1 respectively) and this is discussed.
