Defect formation in crystals grown from aqueous solutions. Growth rate of barium sulphate crystals and its influence on their defect content

Abstract

Crystal defect generation dependence on growth rate is shown to be adequately represented by the Planck–Fokker equation, under widely different supersaturations (0.1–400 fold). The experimental results indicate that the bulk crystal defects are a reflection of the steady state surface defect situation. Rearrangement and migration of trapped solvent molecules, subsequent to growth, leads to formation of micro-inclusions.
