Molecular complexes of naphthalenes. Part 2.—Electromotive force and thermochemical studies of picrate formation

Abstract

Measurements of the free energies of formation of a series of monosubstituted naphthalene picrates have been made by an e.m.f. method. From the temperature variation of these free energies, enthalpy and entropy values for complex formation in the solid state have been obtained. Measurements of the enthalpies of solution of the acceptor, donors and complexes in chloroform have also been made. These allow the e.m.f. results to be related to previously measured solution phase data.
