Nuclear magnetic resonance studies of preferential solvation. Part 5.—Magnesium perchlorate in water + acetone mixtures at 185 K
Abstract
A treatment based on n successive equilibria, where n is the solvation number, has been used to interpret low temperature proton magnetic resonance spectra for solutions of magnesium perchlorate in aqueous acetone of very low water content. No evidence was found for a change in solvation number from 6.0 ± 0.4 with increase in acetone/water ratio, as reported by other workers. The experimental results can be represented by an overall equilibrium constant for solvation change of water to acetone of K1/n=(1.1 ± 0.3)× 10–3 and a statistical distribution of solvated species.
