Kinetics of reaction of low-spin iron(II) complexes in aqueous gels

Abstract

The kinetics of the aquation of tris(5-nitro-1,10-phenanthroline)iron(II) and of the reaction of tris(5-methyl-1,10-phenanthroline)iron(II) with cyanide ion have been studied in aqueous gels and sols. Determined rate constants for these reactions in agar and gelatine-containing systems are remarkably close to those in water, indicating that much of the water in the gels is in a very similar state to that in ordinary water.
