Mechanism of thermolysis of hexamethyldisilane and the silicon–silicon bond dissociation energy

Abstract

A detailed investigation of the thermolysis of hexamethyldisilane in a novel stirred-flow system at temperatures between 770 and 872 K is described. Evidence is presented for a mechanism which accounts for the different behaviour of hexamethyldisilane on thermolysis under different conditions, and a new value of 337 kJ mol–1 for D(Me3Si—SiMe3) is deduced.
