Kinetic data are reported for ring opening of benzocyclobutene-1,2-dione, 3-phenylcyclobutene-1,2-dione, 4-methoxy-3-phenylcyclobutene-1,2-dione, and 3,4-dimethoxycyclobutene-1,2-dione with the zerovalent platinum complexes [Pt(trans-PhCH![[double bond, length half m-dash]](https://www.rsc.org/images/entities/char_e006.gif)
CHPh)(PPh3)2] and [Pt(PhC![[triple bond, length half m-dash]](https://www.rsc.org/images/entities/char_e007.gif)
CPh)(PPh3)2]. Possible mechanisms, intramolecular in chloroform and dissociative in benzene, are proposed in the light of these results.
