Formation of penta-ammine(dinitrogen)- and cis-tetra-amminehydroxo-nrtrosyl-ruthenium from penta-amminenitrosylruthenium and hydroxide ion

Abstract

When[Ru(NH3)5(NO)]3+ is set aside in 0.1M aqueous NaOH for 7 d, [Ru(NH3)5(N2)]2+(25%),cis-[Ru(OH)-(NH3)4(NO)]2+(11%), and trans-[Ru(OH)(NH3)4(NO)]2+(8%) are formed. Evidence is presented that the reactions (i) and (ii) are occurring. The [Ru(OH)(NH3)4(NO)]2+ formed is the cis-isomer. [Ru(NH3)5(NO)]3++OH[Ru(NH2)(NH3)4(NO)]2+(i), [Ru(NH3)5(NO)]3++[Ru(NH2)(NH3)4(NO)]2+[(H3N)5Ru{N(O)NH2}Ru(NH3)4(NO)]5+[Ru(NH3)5(N2)]2++[Ru(OH)(NH3)4(NO)]2+(ii)
