Reactions of some tin(II) and tin(IV) compounds with the dodecahydro-nido-decaborate(2–) ion, [B10H12]2–
Abstract
The new ionic compounds [Ph4As]2[B10H12] and [Ph3MeP]2[B10H12] react with anhydrous SnCl2 to give metallic tin, HCl, salts of closo-[B10H10]2–, and salts of the nido-stannadecaborate ion [B10H12SnCl2]2– which has been shown by 119Sn Mössbauer spectroscopy to be a tin(II) complex. The corresponding reactions with Me2SnCl2 yield [B10H10]2– salts and also the novel tin(II) ion [Me2SnCl2]2– as well as the chelated ion [B10H12Me2SnCl2]2– which has been shown by Mössbauer spectroscopy to be a tin(IV) derivative, I.r. and 11B n.m.r. data are discussed and structures proposed. The compound Et2SnCl2 reacted to give [Ph4As]2[B10H12Et2SnCl2] but Ph2SnCl2 did not lead to isolable stannaborate species.
