Data averaging and pseudo-kinematical approaches to the LEED surface structure problem

Abstract

Some of the problems of constant momentum transfer averaging and Fourier transform approaches to the analysis of LEED data are investigated. Even if these techniques satisfactorily circumvent the multiple scattering problem, the complex nature of scattering factors in LEED leads to a phase problem not present in the commonly used analogue situation of X-ray diffraction. Model calculations show that this leads to a loss of information and hence sensitivity in the application of averaging to adsorbate structures, and to quite spurious results in the application of Fourier transforms to such structures.
