Oxidation of phenols to hydroxycyclohexadienones using diphenylseleninic anhydride

Abstract

Diphenylseleninic anhydride (1) reacts with phenols under neutral conditions to give o- and p-hydroxylation, whereas with phenolate anions only o-hydroxylation is observed.
