Photocyclisation of styrylindoles. Synthesis of 1-, 2-, 3- and 4-methyl-11H-benzo[a]carbazoles

Abstract

11H-Benzo[a]carbazole and the 1-, 2-, 3-, and 4-methyl derivatives have been obtained by photocyclisation of the appropriate 3-styrylindoles. The 1- and 4-methyl compounds can be distinguished by the chemical shifts of the methyl protons. A convenient route to 3-styrylindoles is described.
