Molecular motion in solid complexes. Part 2.—ππ Molecular complexes of naphthalene studied by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy

Abstract

Wide-line n.m.r. has been used to detect and to characterise motional transitions in several ππ molecular complexes of naphthalene in the solid state. The results are discussed with respect to the crystal structures found by X-ray crystallography at room temperature, and predictions are made regarding the temperature dependence of the crystal structures. The general implications of these results and those for complexes of pyrene are also discussed.
