P,V,T Behaviour of liquid n-dodecane at negative pressures

Abstract

The extension of a column of liquid n-dodecane in a centrifugal field has been measured optically. Schlieren photographs of the meniscus position were made at rotational speeds up to 24 000 r.p.m. and at temperatures from 15 to 35°C. The data were correlated using a form of the Tait equation. All of the data were well represented within experimental error, 2.0 × 10–4 cm3 g–1. The isothermal bulk moduli at the vapour pressure K0, found by regression of these negative pressure data, compare favourably to those obtained from sound velocity measurements and those which describe the positive pressure region. Also presented are the observed limiting negative pressures sustained by liquid n-dodecane during the course of this study. The maximum value is –130 atm at 15°C.
