Heterogeneous catalysis in solution. Part XI. Reduction of tris(ethylenediamine)cobait(III) by a carbon black

Abstract

The reduction of [Co(en)3]3+ ions in the presence of carbon black has been studied at 40 °C in aqueous solu-tions containing iodide ions. The reduction is accompanied by the oxidation of iodide ions, and no cobalt(II) is produced in their absence. Measurements have been made of the amounts of [Co(en)3]3+ and of I ions adsorbed on the carbon surface, the variation of pH, and the effects of adding various electrolytes.
