Enthalpies of formation of molybdenum and tungsten tri-iodides

Abstract

The enthalpies of reaction of Mo(CO)6 and of W(CO)6 with iodine vapour at temperatures in the range 520–540 K to form the tri-iodides of the metals have been measured with a Calvet high-temperature microcalorimeter. The results lead to ΔHf°(Mol3,c)=–113 ± 10 kJ mol–1[triple bond, length half m-dash]–27·0 ± 2·5 kcal mol–1 and ΔHf°(Wl3,c)=–46 ± 13 kJ mol–1[triple bond, length half m-dash]–11·0 ± 3 kcal mol–1 for the standard enthalpies of formation at 298 K.
