Polar substituents in pericyclic reactions: photochemistry of 2-cyanobenzobarrelene

Abstract

Deuterium labelling studies show that 7-cyanobenzocyclo-octene, the major product from the direct irradiation of 2-cyanobenzobarrelene, derives from initial 2π+ 2π bonding between the vinyl and vinylcyano units.
