Antimony halides as solvents. Part X. The Lewis basicity of amines in liquid antimony trichloride

Abstract

The Lewis basicity of 12 amines has been measured by electrical conductance for the reaction Am: + 2SbCl3⇄ Am:SbCl2++ SbCl4(A) in liquid antimony trichloride medium at 75°C. Compared with their pKa's (proton basicity) in water tertiary amines are stronger bases than primary amines towards the SbCl2+ ion. For primary amines the pKa's are linearly related to the equilibrium constants (A). Octadecylamine appears to form micelles.
