The acid catalysed hydration of sabinene and α-thujene

Abstract

The kinetics and products of the acid catalysed hydration of sabinene (1-isopropyl-4-methylenebicyclo[3.1.0]hexane) and α-thujene (1-isopropyl-4-methylbicyclo[3.1.0]hex-3-ene) have been studied. The reactions proceed through a common carbonium ion, the rates of formation of which can be correlated with the ground state energies of the olefins.
