Reaction of benzylidenecyclohexanone with borane

Abstract

The reaction of 2-benzylidenecyclohexanone (II) with borane has been investigated. Three asymmetric cenres were generated in a stereospecific manner in fair yield. The mechanism and stereochemistry of the reaction are discussed. The reduction of 2-hydroxy(phenyl)methylcyclohexanone (I) with borane has been also studied. The relative configurations of (I) and those of its reduction products have been determined.
