Neutron inelastic scattering studies on the hydrogen dihalides
Abstract
In this paper we report the results of an examination, both by time of flight, energy-gain inelastic neutron scattering, and by energy-loss inelastic neutron scattering spectroscopy of the vibrational modes of a very wide range of bihalide salts (e.g. NaHF2, KHF2, CsHCl2, CsHClBr, CsHBr2, CsHClI, (CD3)3NC2D5HCl2, (CD3)4NHCl2, CsCl⅓(H3O+HCl–2), CsBr⅓(H3O+HBr–2). The neutron scattering spectra serve as a diagnostic as to whether the bihalide ion is centrosymmetric or not. In all cases they permit an unequivocal identification of the bending mode of the bihalide ions.
