Viscoelastic retardation of liquid mixtures

Abstract

The components of the complex retardational compliance have been determined for a series of mixtures of tri(m-tolyl) phosphate and di(n-butyl) phthalate. In the high viscosity region the complex compliance is described by J*(jω)=J+ 1/jωη+Jr/(1+jωτr)β which is analogous to an equation used by Davidson and Cole in dielectric studies. The values of the retardational compliance Jr and the parameter β vary systematically with mole fraction, the values of Jr are from 3.3 to 8.6 times the limiting high frequency compliance J and the values of β vary from 0.4 to 0.7. In general, the temperature dependence of the characteristic retardation time τr differs from that of the Maxwell relaxation time τm=ηJ.
