Equivalence of two alternative expressions for the primary medium effect

Abstract

It is shown that the expression for the primary medium effect obtained by the application of macroscopic equilibrium thermodynamic expressions for a multi-component fluid in an electric field is, when valid, entirely equivalent to that based on the Kirkwood-Buff theory of solutions.
