Intramolecular heavy-atom effect and intersystem-crossing in monohalogenated pyrenes

Abstract

Fluorescence and phosphorescence parameters of pyrene, 3-chloropyrene and 3-bromopyrene have been determined as a function of temperature. The effect of the heavy (halogen) atom substitution is shown in the transitions which involve a change of spin multiplicity. The dependence of fluorescence lifetimes of 3-chloropyrene on temperature is analyzed in terms of a double intersystem-crossing.
