Lifting of vibrational degeneracies in a crystal field

Abstract

This paper gives an account of the calculation of the magnitude of the splitting of the bending modes of linear triatomic ions, HF–2 and N–3 due (a) to the electrostatic field of the crystal containing the ions and (b) to the coupling of oscillators in a primitive unit cell. The observed splittings are used to calculate the magnitude of the charge moving during the vibration.
