Activity coefficients of some alkali-metal halides in ethylene glycol solution from electromotive force measurements

Abstract

From electromotive force measurements of cells of the type [graphic omitted] containing chlorides and bromides (X = Cl, Br) of lithium, sodium and potassium (M = Li, Na, K) at 15, 25, 35 and 45°C the activity coefficients have been calculated at various molalities (from 0.05 to nearly saturated solution). As in aqueous solution the activity coefficients pass through minima but these are reached at a much lower concentration than in water. At constant composition the activity coefficients decrease somewhat with rise in temperature. Values of the ion size parameter have been calculated.
