Reaction of acetyl radicals with buta-1,3-diene

Abstract

The rate of the acetyl radical addition to buta-1,3-diene has been measured relative to its decomposition rate. Results were obtained in the temperature range 60 to 124°C by measuring the rate of carbon monoxide production when 3-methylbutan-2-one is photolysed in the presence of different buta-1,3-diene pressures. At 200 Torr total pressure, the ratio of the rate constants for reactions (3) and (5) CH3CO·(+ M)→CH3·+CO(+ M)(3), CH3CO·+buta-1,3-diene→CH3COCH2CHCH[double bond, length as m-dash]CH2(5) can be represented by log(k5/k3)=(0.2 ± 0.7)+(10.500 ± 1.000)K/4.57 T where concentrations are measured in mol cm–3.
