Studies in isodielectric solvents. Part 1.—Standard electromotive force values of the cell H2|HCl|AgCl–Ag in methanol and methanol + acetonitrile mixtures

Abstract

The behaviour of hydrogen and silver–silver chloride electrodes in methanol and in 5, 10, 20 and 40 wt.% acetonitrile + methanol mixtures has been investigated. Standard e.m.f. values have been obtained for the cell H2|HCl|AgCl–Ag in these solvents from results obtained with unplatinised hydrogen electrodes. The extended Debye–Hückel theory was applied in the extrapolation procedure, and large deviations from the limiting law are noted.
