Isolation and characterisation of aquo- and phenyl-(diethylenetriamine)platinum(II) complexes

Abstract

The preparation and properties of the complex [Pt(dien)H2O](ClO4)2(dien = diethylenetriamine) are described. Studies of the thermodynamics of displacement of the aquo-ligand in the complex by anionic ligands indicate a stability order of hydroxide > halide > benzenesulphonate > propionate. The complex reacts with sodium tetraphenylborate in aqueous solution at room temperature to give [Pt(dien)Ph]BPh4. Electronic spectra of [Pt(dien)X]+ complexes yield a spectrochemicai series of I < Br < Cl < H2O < Ph < OH for ligands (X) co-ordinated to platinum(II).
