Acetic acid complexes of vanadium(III) and titanium(III)

Abstract

Vanadium(III) halide–acetic acid complexes of the type A[VX4(AcOH)2](A = Et4N, Me4N, or pyH, X = Cl or Br) have been prepare from acetyl halide solutions. Co-ordination of the acetic acid to the metal has been demonstrated by analytical and spectroscopic methods. The complexes are intensely coloured and exhibit thermochromism. Visible and u.v. spectra, halogen nuclear quadrupole resonance spectra, i.r. spectra, and magnetic properties are reported. The method has been extended to the preparation of the corresponding titanium(III) compound, Et4N[TiCl4(AcOH)2], which is reported for the first time.
