Kinetics of the oxidation of uranium(IV) ions by halogens in aqueous solution. Part II. Chlorine

Abstract

The rate of the reaction U4++ Cl2+ 2H2O UO22++ 2Cl+ 4H+ is shown to obey the rate law –d[UIV]/dt=k[UIV][Cl2][H+]–2. The rate constant decreases with increasing [Cl] and the data are interpreted in terms of a mechanism involving two paths, U(OH)22++ Cl2 and U(OH)3++ HOCl. Rate constants and Arrhenius parameters are calculated for the two paths.
