The radiation-induced oxidation of aqueous solutions of hydroquinone

Abstract

The radiation-induced oxidation of hydroquinone in aqueous solution has been investigated. The products are hydrogen peroxide, p-benzoquinone, and 2-hydroxy-p-benzoquinone. The yields are pH-dependent and G(2-hydroxy-p-benzoquinone) decreases to zero at low pH. The effect of solutes on G(p-benzoquinone) has also been investigated and a mechanism suggested for the reaction occurring.
