Primary photophysical processes in benzene. Part 1.—Singlet state studies

Abstract

The fluorescence spectra and measured lifetimes of the first excited state of benzene have been studied as a function of concentration in cyclohexane and of temperature. The fluorescence yields of monomer and excimer have been determined and the intrinsic yields calculated. The effect of increasing temperature shows that the probability of emission from the excimer increases with an activation energy of 0.145 eV. The probability of emission from the excited singlet monomer is independent of temperature. The binding energy of the benzene singlet excimer is found to be 0.34 eV.
