Infra-red cryogenic studies. Part 7.—Hydrogen sulphide in matrices

Abstract

Infra-red spectra are reported of H2S in argon, krypton, nitrogen, and carbon monoxide matrices at 20 K. Assignment of the two stretching modes is in agreement with previous work for the nitrogen matrix, but not for argon and krypton matrices. The separation and relative intensity of the stretching fundamentals show surprisingly large variations between the various matrices. The ν3 and ν1 modes are observed at 2629.1 and 2582.5 cm–1(Ar), 2617.7 and 2576.0 cm–1(Kr), 2632.6 and 2619.5 cm–1(N2), and 2619.9 and 2606.2 cm–1(CO). In argon and krypton matrices ν3 is much weaker than ν1, as for the gas phase, while in nitrogen and carbon monoxide, ν3 is more intense than ν1. Quadratic valence force constants are derived from the observed frequencies.
