Electron emission spectroscopic studies of olefin and other complexes of d8 and d10 metal ions

Abstract

Metal and ligand non-valence electron ionisation energies are reported for a number of complexes of PtO, RhI, and IrI with olefins, substituted olefins, oxygen and other unsaturated ligands. The constancy and magnitude of the metal binding energies in (Ph3P)2Pt(C2R4) and (Ph3P)2Rh(C2R4)Cl, in contrast to the significant variations observed in Ir(CO)(PPh3)2XY (X = Cl or I; Y = olefin, CO, O2, or NO+, BF4) is related to the strong π-basicity of the (Ph3P)2Pt and (Ph3P)2RhCl moieties. Crystallographic and thermodynamic data on some of the complexes are discussed together with observed C(1s) satellite peaks.
