The polarised single-crystal electronic spectra of bisdi(2-aminoethyl)aminenickel(II) chloride monohydrate has been measured and interpreted in D2h symmetry by use of a vibronic mechanism. The small splitting of the octahedral T2g and T1h terms in D2h symmetry is discussed in the light of the restricted tetragonal distortion of the complex.
