Photolysis of 1H- and 5H-2,3-benzodiazepines

Abstract

1H-2,3-Benzodiazepines are isomerised to benzo[c]-1,7-diazabicyclo[3,2,0]hepta-3,6-dienes on irradiation and do not react via extrusion of nitrogen; the 5H-isomers undergo a similar reaction followed by loss of nitrogen to give indenes.
