Oxidation of some 1,2-seco-penicillins

Abstract

Lead tetra-acetate attacks (3R:4R)-1-(1-p-methoxybenzyloxycarbonyl-2-methylprop-1-enyl)-4-methylthio-3-(phenoxyacetamido)azetidin-2-one (I) at the sulphur atom and the adjacent carbon atoms, where-as osmium tetroxide and potassium permanganate remove the complete substituent from the β-lactam nitrogen of (I) and other 1,2-seco-penicillins.
