Heats of adsorption for C4, C5 and C6 hydrocarbons on cobalt oxide determined by gas chromatography

Abstract

The heats of adsorption and the relative adsorption constants for C4, C5 and C6 hydrocarbons were determined on cobalt oxide by means of gas/solid chromatography. The values are discussed in terms of electronic and steric effects. The values for C4 and C5 olefins depend mostly on electronic effects, while those for C6 olefins are influenced seriously by steric effects. The values indicate a π-complex involving no back donation for the adsorbed olefin. The adsorbed state of the olefin seems to depend on the surface state of the oxide.
