Thermodynamics of the manganese carbides Mn7C3, Mn5C2 and Mn23C6

Abstract

Free energies of formation of the phases stable below 1100 K have been measured, over the temperature range 900–1100 K, by means of a solid state galvanic cell with CaF2 as electrolyte. Cells used were Mn, MnF2| CaF2| MnF2, Mn7C3, C, Mn, MnF2| CaF2| MnF2, Mn7C3, Mn5C2, Mn, MnF2| CaF2| MnF2, Mn5C2, Mn23C6 Values offΔG°100 obtained were: Mn7C3–21 400 cal mol–1. Mn5C2–15 160 cal mol–1, Mn23C6–58 700 cal mol–1.
