Lithium + methylamine solutions. Part 1.—Densities

Abstract

The densities of the lithium + methylamine system were measured from –50 to –6.7°C as a function of Li concentration (0 to ∼10 mol % metal). With the aid of the measurements for some salt solutions, the apparent molar volume of solvated electrons was determined. The observed large volume expansion can be understood by supposing the electrons to be bound in cavities of the average radius of 3.34 Å at –6.7°C. The energy separation of these trapped electrons in the present system was calculated by Jortner's formulation proposed for metal + ammonia solutions. The result is in good agreement with the optical absorption data.
